WINDSOR
Today I
woke up soon, Windsor was waiting for me!
Windsor is only
34 Km far away from London and it is known for its Castle that is one of the
Royal residence.
A piece of
history: It is a medieval castle as it dated from 9th Century but it
has being changed by the different Kings all over the time. It also comprises a
chapel, St George Chapel dated from 15th Century. Unfortunately, in
1992 some parts of the Castle were burnt in a big fire. The good news is that
they have restored it perfectly!
Once I left
the train the Castle appears in front of me. It is big and impressive. All the tourists
(and indeed me as well) were running up hill to be the first one to arrive. It
was like “the run of the tourists”. Visiting the castle without the audio guide
is nonsense, so please ask for one. It is included with the ticket. It also
gives you access to St George Chapel and the doll house.
I recommend
you to start the visit with the Chapel. It is beautifully constructed and
decorated. I do like the monument to Princess Charlotte and the altar is
speechless.
My next
stop were the house of dolls. The Doll’s house was a present to Queen Mary who
loved them. It wasn’t a house to play or at least it is said that no one has
played with it. Anyway, the love of Queen Mary for her house of dolls were
something everyone knew and different artists and artisan gave to the Queen
small replicas of their best works. As an anecdote, the last acquisition is a
hoover. The house has water and electricity… amazing.
The last
stop was the Castle’s rooms. Each room is gorgeous and unique. It is a pity
that some of them were burnt in 1992. The restoration work has been amazing and
you can only know they has been restored if they tell you. To take pictures is forbidden
and there is no words to describe them.
I was
enjoying a lot and I didn`t check the time, easily I spent more than 2 hours in
the castle.
